Thing-a-Day :: Day 29

It's the final thing! I had a great time seeing everyone's projects over the month. Some days were easier than others, but I'm glad I stuck with it and actually did something every day this month!

I'm thinking of doing a redesign on my blog and updating the look. Today I played around with some banner ideas, so here are two versions, with a couple variations on each. I like to keep things pretty simple:

I owe a lot of people thanks for sending great feedback over the course of the month. I've gotten some lovely comments and emails, and it's been so crazy that I haven't had the chance to say thanks to everyone individually. You should see all the emails I've starred in my inbox. Believe me, I'm looking forward to focusing on a a bunch of knitting again - starting tonight!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Thing-a-Day :: Day 28

On Thursday I took some photos of the view from my office building. We have a great view of midtown and I've been wanting to get some photos before we move out of the building at the end of the month.

thing-a-day :: Day 27

sewing machine drawing Last night I took another foray into sewing and hemmed up a pair of pants that I've been wearing with staples in the cuffs to keep the fold in! Unfortunately, black pants don't seem to photograph well, nor would it be a particularly interesting photo anyways, so here is a stock photo of a sewing machine I did not use. But it's a cool illustration.

The sewing went much better that my elastic-waist skirt experiment, but these were pants out of a woven fabric (instead of a knit) and therefore were much easier to seam.

Thing-a-Day :: Day 26

I recently started photographing the labels of wines that I've been drinking, because I have the worst memory for what I've tried or had before, but also because wine labels can be awfully pretty. When I was in design school, one of the projects for one for the typography classes was to create a wine label (not the class I was in - curses!). Today I finally uploaded the rest to Flickr. Here's a mosaic (things always look nice in a mosaic, don't you think?).

Whew! I think I'm all caught up now!

Thing-a-Day :: Day 25

I wound yarn for my next sweater by hand. Not particularly creative, but relaxing and nice to run the hands through your hands. This is Berroco Ultra Alpaca, and I'm using it to make the Gathered Pullover from the Winter '07 Interweave Knits.

I took photos of the Oscars. I love the effect that the digital photos have on the TV. Click on an image to see some more in my Flickr account.

Thing-a-Day :: Day 23

Just a photo for Saturday's thing. I was cat-sitting over the weekend, and for lack of a better project, I'm posting a photo I took that day:

Thing-a-Day :: Day 22

On Friday I rolled up some paper beads out of newspaper. I still need to seal them. I actually wasn't sure I liked them until I strung them all together.

Thing-a-Day :: Day 21

I'm catching up on some missed days because I was cat-sitting over the weekend with no way to upload...

I enjoyed making the origami stars, so I did some more in two sizes. These are folded out of coupon circulars from the newspaper.

FO :: Drops Jacket

I'm so glad to have finally finished this. The Drops Jacket (103-1) that's been awfully popular since last fall (350 in Ravelry!). There's no good reason to have taken 4 months to complete this, although I did have some other projects in the meantime.

Drops Jacket.jpg
I learned that wet blocking before seaming isn't necessarily the best idea. The measurements for the shoulders got wonky and made the seaming really difficult. In the meantime I read that it might be better to steam block before seaming, and then do a wet block once it's all put together. A second wet block took care of the problem and all in all, I'm pleased with how it came out.

I had a lot of inquiries regarding using the Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky yarn for this sweater. I think it would work better at a smaller gauge with some of the math reworked instead of forcing the gauge via needle size, which is what I did. I'm not 100% pleased with the drape of the fabric, but this is also a function of the 100% wool. Hopefully it will soften with some wear. Some of what is aesthetically pleasing in the original photo is the drape of the fabric, and I think that could be better achieved using some sort of blended wool, or something else altogether.

Yarn: Knit Picks WOTA Bulky in Pewter
Completed: Feb. 2008
Modifications: Not many. I added some length.

Thing-a-Day :: Day 19

Working out a bookplate idea. These are rough sketches, but I wanted to try to work in my antler-craze:

Thing-a-Day :: Day 18

Here's a glimpse of the finished Drops Jacket. I was working on finishing this up today so I've posted it as my thing-a-day, even though it's not a start-to-finish one day project.

I'll post a better photo tomorrow when I have some more time to sit and write out a proper post.

Thing-a-Day :: Day 17

I didn't get the chance to blog this yesterday. I'm not much of a sewer, but this is my attempt at a pull-on skirt. It works, but there's a lot of wonkiness to it. I think it'll be good to wear around the house in the summer, though.

I have a subway diptych today. I like the bright color lines and the grey.subway1.jpgsubway2.jpg

Foodie Friday :: Sushi

The weekend before last I took a sushi-making class at Soy in Manhattan on the Lower East Side. It was a 2 hour class, where we learned how to make sushi rice, prepare the ingredients, and roll regular, inside-out, and hand rolls. With only 4 of in the class, it gave us all a chance to do some slicing, and rolling.

It was fun to take a little master class. It was a really affordable course and we got to eat all of the sushi we made--I even had enough left over to take a bit home. I was always intimidated by sushi rice and how to make it correctly, so I have a slightly better grasp on that, even though my rolling technique leaves much to be desired. Practice makes perfect and not long from now I'll have a new party skill!

Now I would love to take more cooking classes. No cuisine is safe! Indian, Indonesian, Thai, Southern, French! Knife skills! Pastries!

Visit Soy at soynyc.com to find out about the restaurant or classes.

Blue Sky = love

Hope everyone had a lovely valentines day. Mine was uneventful, except for that I fell in looooooooooovvvveeeee!

It might be hard to describe the feelings I have for Blue Sky Alpaca Sport. So soft. So very soft. And pretty. After I bought it, I carried it around the house with me for hours. I'm using this to make a Twiggy Bobble Hat. I cross my fingers, eyes and toes for the finished hat to be as pretty as the skein of yarn itself.

Thing-a-Day :: Day 14

Today, a photo. It was bright and clear, so I snapped a photo while walking by the Empire State building:

Thing-a-Day :: Day 13

I've been obsessing over antlers and design that features them recently (as design, such as ceramic or in jewelry, etc., not taxidermy,) so I thought I'd make some more patterns. The first was a mistake, but I ended up liking how it looked (doesn't that always happen?), and the second is just repetitive. I'd love to find a better-resolution image.

Thing-a-Day :: Day 12

I had some fun playing with the pattern maker in Photoshop. It totally didn't do what I was expecting it to do, but the results somehow still worked. At least for these two. So I figured they will be my thing of the day today.

It's another paper strip art project. I wish I could do these earlier in the day and get a daylight photo to avoid the reflection...

Thing-a-Day :: Day 9

I got the idea for this from the blog A Little Hut. I bookmarked her work a few months ago because the cutouts reminded me of the doodles that I used to do in my college notebooks, and today I was browsing through my Podcasts and came across one on the Craft Magazine podcast with a tutorial. I'd like to do more of these...

Thing-a-Day :: Day 8

Awhile ago, I heard of a photo exercise where you are to take photos holding your camera at your hip, relinquishing some control over your subject matter. I did this today during my lunch break. When I got home, I applied some vintage filters to some of them to give them a vintage, lomographic look.

Today it's all about origami stars. I used an Anthropologie catalog and tried to choose the images that would give the most contrast in color or texture.
